MK BASIX & Thermal Assessments
MK BASIX & Thermal Assessments was established to provide effective solutions for BASIX & NatHERS certification and to make a real contribution towards energy efficient housing through thoughtful & efficient building design practices.
With a background in residential building design that started in 2005, we are experienced in all aspects of the design and approval process & we draw from that knowledge and experience to provide the best outcome for your project.
MK BASIX & Thermal Assessments provides NatHERS thermal performance assessments & BASIX certificates for new building projects and alterations & additions to existing homes in the Illawarra, Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and South Coast Regions.
What is a BASIX certificate?
In NSW, a BASIX (Building And Sustainability IndeX) certificate is required for all new building work including new homes, granny flats habitable conversions, alterations and additions valued at over $50,000 and for pools over 40,000L in capacity.
The BASIX certificate is lodged to your council or private certifier as part of your Development Application or Complying Development Certificate Application.
The BASIX certificate will detail the requirements needed to ensure compliance with minimum efficiency targets regarding water usage, energy usage and thermal comfort. This can include the efficiency ratings of plumbing & light fixtures, hot water unit, cooking appliances, heating & cooling appliances and insulation.
The thermal performance requirements can either be completed directly through BASIX DIY method, or with a thermal performance assessment which may allow a better outcome through greater flexibility in materials & construction selections as well as provide a detailed analysis of each space to fine tune the building fabric.

What is a Thermal Performance Assessment?
A Thermal Performance Assessment or NatHERS (Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme) certificate is an analysis of a proposed buildings potential for passive heating, passive cooling and thermal comfort. It can provide valuable insight into how your home may help to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer while minimizing energy use.
The assessment will model the building layout, orientation, construction materials, glazing, colours and surround structures to calculate the potential heating and cooling needs of the building. The software we use utilizes a calculation engine developed by the CSIRO.
A NatHERS certificate can be used to verify compliance with the National Construction Codes thermal performance targets and can satisfy the thermal performance targets for BASIX in NSW. To complete a NatHERS certificate the assessor must be accredited through an Assessor Accrediting
Organisation. We maintain our accrediation through the House Energy Raters Association (HERA).
Your Architectural plans will be stamped with the NatHERS logo to certify that the design complies with the necessary thermal performance targets. These plans will form part of your Development Application.
